Hi,
A few people asked me something recently:
“Why are you paying to run a marathon?
You can run or walk in a garden or road for free.”
It’s a fair question.
And honestly—I agree with half of it.
Yes, you can run or walk anywhere.
A park. A garden. A road.
Movement doesn’t require registration fees.
So why did I still choose to participate in a marathon event?
Not for the running.
The Real Reason People Join Events
Most people don’t struggle with knowing what to do.
They struggle with doing it consistently.
That’s where events help.
A marathon (or any event) gives you:
• a fixed date
• a sense of commitment
• something outside your daily mood
You stop negotiating with yourself.
You don’t wake up asking, “Should I walk today?”
You wake up knowing, “I’ve committed.”
That’s powerful.
Why This Matters to YOU (Even If You Only Walk)
You don’t need to run a marathon.
You don’t need medals or timing chips.
But you do need anchors.
Anchors are things that:
• keep you consistent
• pull you back when motivation drops
• remind you why you started
For some people, it’s a marathon.
For others, it’s:
• a daily step target
• a walking streak
• a calendar challenge
• a personal promise
The form doesn’t matter.
The commitment does.
Walking Daily vs “Knowing Walking Is Good”
Most people already know:
Walking is healthy.
Movement helps fat loss.
But knowledge doesn’t change bodies.
Systems do. you can read that here
Events are just one way to build a system.
Walking every day at a fixed time?
That’s also a system.
A 20-minute minimum rule on bad days?
That’s a system.
Tracking steps weekly instead of chasing motivation?
That’s a system.
The Real Lesson
I didn’t join a marathon because gardens are useless.
I joined because humans need structure.
And the same applies to your health.
If you’re waiting for motivation, you’ll keep restarting.
If you build commitment into your routine, progress becomes automatic.
So ask yourself:
👉 What is my anchor?
👉 What keeps me showing up even on low-energy days?
That’s where real change begins.
Keep walking.
Keep showing up.

PS: You don’t need a marathon. You need a system your worst days can follow. [in this earlier post].
